A Gym with a Long History

PTAC is a gym but it's so much more. When you first enter our building you are stepping into a piece of Port Townsend history...

The Port Townsend Athletic Club (PTAC) boasts a rich history that intertwines with the community's athletic and social fabric. Established in 1893, the club initially formed a football team known as the "Cougars." Their inaugural game against the Seattle Athletic Club resulted in a 40-0 loss, a challenging debut given that only two players had prior experience with the sport.

In 1912, PTAC evolved into a social hub located in the Hill & Landes Building on Water Street. This incarnation offered various recreational activities, including pool, weightlifting, and occasional championship wrestling matches. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by fire in 1959, marking a significant setback for the club.

The early 1980s witnessed a revival of PTAC, initiated by John Buhler and Bernie Lundgren. They transformed the former Port Townsend Brewing Company site into a racquetball club and gym, reintroducing the community to the club's fitness offerings. Teresa Hoffman, who had been providing personal training services at PTAC, purchased the facility in September 2007. Under her leadership, the club underwent significant renovations, blending modern fitness amenities with the historic charm of the building.

Today, PTAC continues to serve the Port Townsend community, offering a range of fitness facilities and classes. The club's commitment to health and wellness remains steadfast, honoring its legacy while embracing contemporary fitness trends.
